Course Description

The Sydney Clinical Skills and Simulation Centre presents this program in collaboration with the Health Education and Training Institute (HETI).

Aims

This workshop broadly aims to develop medical managers’ communication skills relevant to dealing with disrespectful behaviour and promoting a respectful and just culture within the healthcare workforce. The workshop focuses on behaviours of doctors that can be perceived as disrespectful or bullying. Using case scenarios this topic is viewed through the lens of clinicians accused of disrespectful, bullying behaviour, the people who are targets of this behaviour and onlookers who can and should intervene on behalf of the victim.

Objectives

The workshop will be presented in two parts:

  1. Part 1 addresses escalation language used ‘in-the-moment’ to diffuse and end disrespectful bullying behaviour. The “Probe – Alert – Challenge – Emergency (PACE)” approach to graded assertiveness is presented.

  2. Part 2 addresses one-one-one conversations that follow-up on complaints or concerns about disrespectful behaviour. Key themes from the HETI Conversations in Medical Supervision Course (CiMS) program are presented including conversation structure, empathy, feedback and coaching. These elements enable managers to raise issues and uncover the other person’s perspective with a view to enabling them to change their behaviours and build positive relationships with colleagues.

Training Techniques

The workshops involves role play and simulations with faculty actors. Content addresses situational specific procedural knowledge and communication techniques including conversation structure, language and non-verbal skills.
